What is return air?
Return air is room air moving back toward the HVAC equipment to be filtered, conditioned, and circulated again.
Return air: Air moving from occupied rooms back to the HVAC equipment for filtering and conditioning.
Return air is the air an HVAC system pulls from occupied rooms back toward the indoor equipment. It travels through return grilles and ducts, usually passing through a filter before reaching the blower and cooling coil.
Why return paths matter
The blower can deliver supply air only if air can also return. Furniture over a grille, a loaded or wrong-size filter, damaged return ductwork, or a closed bedroom without an adequate return path can affect comfort and pressure. ENERGY STAR recommends keeping ducts sealed and using qualified evaluation for duct problems (duct guidance).
Keep grilles clear and follow the equipment manual for normal filter care. Do not cut doors, add transfer grilles, or change ductwork based on a tissue test. A professional can measure static pressure and airflow to determine whether the return system is part of the problem.
