What does MERV mean?
MERV is a standard rating for how effectively an air filter captures particles in defined size ranges.
MERV: Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, a standard scale for particle-capture performance of air filters.
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It describes a filter’s ability to capture particles in defined size ranges under a standard test. Higher MERV means greater capture efficiency, but it does not automatically mean “best for this system.”
Fit and airflow still matter
EPA explains that MERV runs from 1 to 16 for the commonly used scale and recommends choosing filtration that the HVAC system can accommodate (EPA). Filter dimensions, area, depth, loading, rack leakage, and blower capability all affect the installed result.
Match the equipment documentation and the filter rack. Do not force a thick filter into a shallow opening or assume a higher number is harmless. Use the filter finder to record the visible size, location, and current rating; have airflow checked if the system becomes noisy or weak after a change.
